Ireland Deficit Running At €180m Per Week

The Exchequer Deficit - the excess of government outgoings over income - is currently running at €180,000,000 per week.

The Deficit in the eight months January to end August 2014 amounted to €6,332m, according to the latest government figures.

Government receipts exceeded current expenditure – spending by government departments – by €947m in the period. But non-department current expenditure amounted to €6,635 in the eight months.

This latter figure was mainly made up of interest on the national debt (€4,829m) and Ireland's contribution to the EU Budget (€1,173m).

Ireland's gross national debt at the end of 2013 was  €215,500m, equivalent to 123.3% of GDP. This compares with 174.1% for Greece, 135.6% for Italy, 91.1% for the UK, 77.3% in Germany, 96.8% in Spain, 96.6% in France and 58.6% in Finland. (September 2014)
